Illinois adds two conditions to medical cannabis program

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — Two additional medical conditions are now eligible for treatment through Illinois’ Medical Cannabis Patient Program
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced that polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome with chronic pain and sickle cell disease have been added to the state’s list of debilitating medical conditions that qualify for the program
IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra approved the additions following a review by the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board and department staff
“Medical cannabis can provide relief for people living with certain debilitating conditions,” Vohra said. “IDPH reviews petitions carefully using expert opinion and the most up to date evidence to make decisions that best serve Illinois residents.”
Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, or PMOS, was formerly known as polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS. The condition involves hormonal fluctuations that can affect metabolism, reproductive health, skin and mental well-being. The newly approved eligibility applies to patients with PMOS who experience chronic pain
Sickle cell disease refers to a group of inherited red blood cell disorders that can cause severe pain, anemia, fatigue, swelling, infections and organ damage
According to IDPH, medical cannabis can provide relief from pain associated with both conditions

The additions bring the total number of qualifying conditions in Illinois’ Medical Cannabis Patient Program to 58
