More than 40 undergrads are presenting research in Oklahoma this week, with hopes of improving health in tribal communities

Dozens of college students are in Oklahoma this week showcasing their research that they hope will improve health in tribal communities
This 8-week thesis internship program is preparing the next generation of public health leaders. More than 40 undergraduate students are presenting research aimed at some of the biggest public health challenges that tribal communities are facing

“We want to teach public health, teach native culture, and we want professional development,” Gary Piercy, program manager of the thesis program, said
The program consists of 41 undergrads from 19 states. This year, 10 students are representing Oklahoma. Organizers say it goes beyond research
“Some might go to med school, some of them might be epidemiologist, some may even go into law,” Piercy said. “It advances their career, their next step in being the future in tribal public health.”
