JACKSON, Miss. —
The summer heat isn’t slowing down members of the JXN Run Club. Runners hit the pavement Sunday morning even as meteorologists said temperatures were nearing triple digits
Keith Young says the heat is part of the challenge, not a reason to stay home

“Whether it’s one hundred degrees, 10 degrees, 97 degrees, still going to be out here in the heat,” runner Young said. “Still going to run, still going to get the work in.”
Young has been part of the JXN Run Club for just over a year and says the positive community keeps him coming back. State health officials warn exercising or working in extreme heat can increase the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration and heat stroke, but JXN runners say they take precautions to protect themselves
“I ice for like 15 to 30 minutes,” said runner Aniecia Brewster. “Make sure I’m eating properly. Make sure I’m hydrated properly.”
Young agreed, saying, “I drink a gallon of water a day because I know I’m going to sweat, so I make sure I get the water in before.”
Many JXN runners said water, pacing themselves, and listening to their bodies are key. They also say the support from other members helps
“It definitely motivates you and keeps you going with the brotherhood and sisterhood out here,” said Marlon Milton, another runner
Young says he sometimes thinks about staying home when the weather is hot, but he doesn’t let the heat get in the way of his goals
“It’s always going to be that thought in your mind like, ‘Aw man, it’s hot outside, I really don’t want to go out there and do that,’ but I kind of block it out,” he said. “You can’t sit in the house and get your goals done.”
Runners say they’re focused on running because it helps them reach their physical health goals while also supporting their mental health. They say the family-like run club community is also a bonus
