CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) —We Are Sharing Hope SC hosted its fifth annual Community Health Fair Saturday in West Ashly, bringing residents together with health and wellness re
The free event connected attendees with local health care providers and community organizations offering information on physical and mental health, healthy living, kidney health, pediatric safety, behavioral health, hospice care, health insurance, financial wellness, Medicaid and LGBTQ+ support services
Organizers also provided information about organ, eye and tissue donation. More than 1,200 South Carolinians from multicultural backgrounds are currently waiting for lifesaving transplants

National Multicultural Donor Awareness Month is observed each August to promote conversations about donation and transplantation within multicultural communities
“We are incredibly proud to host this event for the fifth year, as it reflects our ongoing commitment to serving this community and building meaningful connections that save lives,” Krystal Cau, director of communications for We Are Sharing Hope SC, said in a statement
NASCAR driver Joey Gase attended the event, meeting with community members and inviting them to add handprints to his race car. Gase is scheduled to race in Darlington on Sept. 5, and his car will feature the logos of We Are Sharing Hope SC and Donate Life South Carolina, along with the handprints collected at the fair

Gase has advocated for organ donation since his family donated his mother’s organs, eyes and tissue after she died from a brain aneurysm in 2011
“My family made the decision to donate her organs, eyes and tissue, and because of that decision, she was able to save and improve the lives of 66 people,” Gase said in a statement
The health fair also included back-to-school supply giveaways and raffle prizes, including tickets to local attractions
