N.D. (Valley News Live) – Former Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney is in line to stay in public service in a new role overseeing local public health

The Fargo City Commission on Monday is scheduled to consider a five-year contract naming Mahoney, a physician, as health officer for Fargo Cass Public Health, serving the City of Fargo and all of Cass County. The proposal appears as Item 20 on the commission’s consent agenda: “Agreement for Health Officer Services Between the City of Fargo and Tim Mahoney, MD (RFP26212).”

According to information in the agenda packet, the position was offered to Mahoney after a competitive search that drew several qualified candidates. An interview panel that included Board of Health members and Fargo Cass Public Health staff reviewed the applicants before recommending Mahoney. The agreement says the offer has been accepted and would become effective Sept. 1, 2026, if approved

Under the proposed contract, Mahoney would be paid $3,200 a month, or $38,400 a year, with an annual $200-per-month increase on the anniversary of the initial contract. The agreement also allows Mahoney to bill $173 for each media interview he is asked to conduct, by submitting an invoice for reimbursement

The health officer, who must be a physician, is responsible for enforcing public health laws, regulations and ordinances related to the preservation of life and health, according to the agreement

The move follows a formal search process that began in June, when the city issued a request for proposals identified as RFP26212, seeking health officer services for both Fargo and Cass County. The RFP described the post as providing public health leadership, ensuring regulatory compliance and overseeing health programs across both jurisdictions

If the agreement is approved, Mahoney would shift from elected office into a contracted public health leadership role. The commission meeting begins at 5 p.m., with the consent agenda scheduled early in the session
