Measles case confirmed in Barbour County, W.Va., health officials say

BARBOUR COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) —The West Virginia Department of Health has confirmed a case of measles in a Barbour County resident who recently traveled out-of-state
State and local health officials are currently investigating the case and conducting contact tracing
As of Friday morning, officials do not believe there is a risk of exposure to the public
Area clinics have been alerted of the case and providers are asked to look out for symptomatic patients
Measles is highly contagious and may lead to serious health complications, especially in young children
Symptoms typically develop a week or two after contact and include the following:
- High fever
- Rash
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
The best form of protection against the virus isthe MMR vaccine
More than 2,300 cases have been confirmed in dozens of states this year, including Kentucky and Ohio, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
CDC numbers show fewer cases were confirmed in all of last year
Measles was declared eliminated from the U.S. in 200, but since early 2025, cases have been increasing
