Nakshi Katha Marathon blends heritage, youth and healthy living

The ‘Nakshi Katha Marathon’ was held at Hatirjheel in the capital on Friday, bringing together Bangladesh’s folk heritage, youth and the message of healthy living

Organised by NSU Runners, with fashion and lifestyle brand Twelve as the title sponsor, the event attracted around 1,500 runners. The marathon began at 5am, with participants competing in 2km, 5km and 15km categories

Runners began gathering at Hatirjheel before dawn, with young people making up a significant portion of the participants. The event turned the roads around the lake into a lively scene as runners of different ages took part in the competition

The central theme of the marathon was Nakshi Katha, one of the most recognisable forms of Bengal’s folk heritage. Traditionally created by rural women, Nakshi Katha reflects people’s lives, nature, emotions and cultural traditions through intricate designs and stitching

By incorporating the traditional art form into a modern sporting event, the organisers sought to introduce Nakshi Katha to a younger generation in a contemporary setting.

Twelve’s participation was also linked to its efforts to promote Bangladeshi culture and creativity through fashion. The brand has incorporated Nakshi Katha-inspired designs and artistic elements into several of its collections. It joined the event to recognise the creativity and contribution of artisans and designers associated with the traditional craft

Prizes were distributed among the winners at the end of the races. Participants said the event went beyond a conventional running competition by combining physical exercise with an appreciation of Bangladesh’s cultural heritage

The closing ceremony was held at the Hatirjheel Amphitheatre, where members of NSU Runners performed a colourful flash mob inspired by the Nakshi Katha theme. The dance and music performance added a festive atmosphere while presenting traditional culture through a contemporary medium

Another attraction was a large-scale mural of football star Lionel Messi created by Bangladeshi artist Mishu Sabbir. Organisers said the artwork is currently awaiting recognition from Guinness World Records

Participants said initiatives combining sports with cultural heritage could encourage young people to take greater interest in Bangladesh’s traditions while creating opportunities to showcase local art and creativity internationally

Twelve said it would continue supporting initiatives promoting Bangladesh’s heritage, culture, creativity and healthy living

From the early-morning run to the cultural performances, the Nakshi Katha Marathon offered a distinctive blend of tradition, modernity and youthful energy
