National Nutrition Week 2026: How To Give Your Favourite Junk Foods A Nutrition Upgrade

    ByAditi SaraswatUpdated:Aug 31, 2026

National Nutrition Week 2026 is a good time to rethink everyday junk food without giving up the flavours you enjoy. From whole-wheat pizza and noodles to beetroot fries and protein-rich burgers, here are practical swaps that improve what each dish brings to the plate

National Nutrition Week 2026 is observed in India from September 1 to 7 every year to attract attention to better eating practices and the role that nutrition plays in health. However, nutrition guidance can quickly turn out to be a list of foods to avoid, have less sugar, etc, which can be upsetting when pizza, burgers, noodles and fries are the love of your life

A more realistic approach is to change what goes into your favourite junk food that you already enjoy. ICMR-NIN’s Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024 warn against frequent consumption of foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt, and suggest choosing fresh and minimally processed foods more often. They also make an essential point: even homemade food can become less healthy when made with too much fat, sugar or salt

So, rather than simply swapping maida for whole wheat and calling it a day, here are five practical ways to make your relished junk foods more balanced. The trick is to add more protein, vegetables, pulses or fibre, without pulling away what makes the food delightful

Pizza: Upgrade The Base, Cheese And Toppings

If your pizza begins with a maida base, the first upgrade is substituting it with whole-wheat ones that are readily available in the market. Whole wheat adds more fibre and makes the base more substantial. Rather than piling on cheese, use a thinner layer and add hung curd, paneer or a little grated mozzarella to get the creaminess and also protein. For toppings, go beyond just using capsicum and corn: add mushrooms, spinach, roasted pumpkin or broccoli, along with some paneer or grilled chicken, if you eat meat. This way, every piece has a purpose—whole wheat for fibre, vegetables for variety and protein-rich toppings for taste, while cheese remains just a flavour element rather than the main component.

Burger: Fix The Patty And The Sauce

Your regular burger can be heavy on a refined-flour bun, fried patty, cheese and mayonnaise, so elevating just the bun does not make much of a difference. You can still use a whole-wheat or multigrain bun, but pay more attention to the filling. Replace that deep-fried patty with grilled chicken, fish, paneer, egg or a rajma or chickpeas patty.

Swap the mayonnaise for hung curd mixed with mustard, herbs or mint for the taste. Add cabbage, tomato, cucumber and onion to get the crunch. The result still tastes like the regular burger, but the filling adds more protein and gives you room to add more vegetables instead of depending just on the cheese and creamy sauces that add nothing but calories

Beetroot Fries: Replace The Potato, Change The Cooking

Instead of the regular potato fries, cut the beetroot into thick sticks and roast or air-fry them with a little oil, pepper, garlic and your regular herbs. Beetroot adds fibre and naturally occurring plant compounds while giving the snack its unique colour. The bigger upgrade here is the cooking method: baking or air-frying uses much less oil than deep-frying. Don’t serve them with just the regular ketchup. Instead, pair them with a homemade dip made of hung curd or hummus, which adds protein and makes the snack more filling and tempting. You get the familiar fry taste, but the vegetable itself becomes the star rather than just using the healthy dip.

Whole-Wheat Noodles: Replace The Noodles, Rethink The Seasoning

Regular instant noodles are mostly refined flour, and the seasoning can make the bowl quite salty. Choose whole-wheat noodles instead to get a higher-fibre base, then make the seasoning work harder. Use only part of the sachet and create flavour with garlic, ginger, chilli, pepper, sesame and a small amount of soy sauce. Add cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, spinach and beans, and also egg, tofu, paneer or chicken to get some protein. This turns a bowl that is mostly noodles into a more whole meal that has the goodness of vegetables adding bulk and the protein making it more filling.

Whole-Wheat Pasta: Upgrade The Pasta And Hide Good Stuff In The Sauce

Start with whole-wheat pasta in place of refined pasta, but don’t stop just there thinking it’s done. The sauce is where you can make the biggest difference without losing the comfort-food aspect. Blend chickpeas or white beans with tomato sauce to add body, fibre and plant protein to the base. You can also stir in some mushrooms, spinach, peas, broccoli or roasted peppers. If you want to get a creamy pasta, blend pumpkin or cauliflower into the sauce and use less cream and cheese. This keeps the creamy texture familiar while making the sauce add vegetables and pulses, rather than being primarily cream, cheese and fat.
