KISSIMMEE, Fla.– Navy Medicine Research & Development’s (NMR&D) attendance at the 2026 Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS), Aug. 3-6 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center, concluded this past Thursday

Throughout the four-day symposium, NMR&D personnel participated in scientific presentations, poster sessions, panel discussions and collaborative engagements highlighting research focused on improving the health and readiness of U.S. service members and their families

Attendees for NMR&D at this year’s MHSRS come from across eight commands: Naval Medical Research Command (NMRC), Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL), Naval Health Research Command (NHRC), Naval Medical Research Units (NAMRU) Dayton, San Antonio, EURAFCENT, INDO PACIFIC and SOUTH

“Serving as a poster judge and representing NMRC at the command booth allowed me to contribute beyond my own research while building relationships with current and future partners,” explained Lt. Sara Tuck, a microbiologist with the command. “The experience reinforced the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing in accelerating scientific innovation and strengthening our ability to support the warfighter.”

In addition to scientific presentations, NMR&D commands maintained a unified presence in the MHSRS exhibit hall, where representatives highlighted the breadth of Navy medical research. The exhibit allowed attendees from other organizations to learn about ongoing research, discuss NMR&D’s broad range of capabilities and explore opportunities for future collaboration

“The exhibit gives us an opportunity to tell the broader story of Navy Medicine Research & Development in one place,” said Tommy Lamkin, NMR&D public affairs officer. “Whether someone stops by to learn about a specific research program or to explore potential partnerships, those conversations lead to new collaborations, and a better understanding of how our research supports the health of U.S. service members and the readiness of our fighting forces.”

“MHSRS is a vital opportunity to unite researchers from all eight of our labs with the broader military and scientific communities,” added Lt. Cmdr. Dawn Weir, acting science director with NMRC. “Elevating awareness of NMR&D’s extensive research portfolio allows us to build and strengthen critical partnerships to drive high-impact solutions that keep our warfighters ready for the fight.”

At this year’s symposium, NMR&D researchers received formal recognition for excellence in multiple endeavors, underscoring the organization’s continued leadership in advancing military medical research and translating scientific discoveries into operational capabilities. Multiple NMR&D commands received awards for poster presentations on the final day of the symposium

Researchers with NAMRU EURAFCENT received second place in poster session one for “Characterization of Antimicrobial Resistance Phonotypes in Surgical Site Infections at a Military Hospital in Cameroon.” Isabelle Nakhla accepted the award on Thursday

NAMRU San Antonio received third place in poster session for research into sterile, reusable medical instruments

Staff with NHRC received an honorable mention for poster session two, for research concerning “An Evaluation of Non-Care Seeking for Tinnitus in the Military Health System.”

“Awards like these showcase the strength of Navy Medicine Research & Development,” said Capt. Eric Welsh, commander, NMRC. “Every breakthrough begins with a commitment to scientific excellence, collaboration and a focus on the needs of the warfighter. Seeing our teams recognized at MHSRS highlights the critical role Navy medical research plays in delivering solutions that protect those who serve.”

MHSRS is the DoD’s premier scientific meeting, focusing specifically on the unique medical needs of service members. This annual educational symposium brings together healthcare professionals, researchers and DoD leaders for four days of critical learning, intensive idea sharing and relationship building

NMR&D, a global collective of eight commands conducts research in support of Navy, Marine Corps and joint U.S. warfighter health, readiness and lethality, across a broad spectrum of activity from basic science in the laboratory to field studies in austere and remote areas of the world to investigations in operational environments. NMR&D studies infectious diseases, biological warfare detection and defense, combat casualty care, environmental health concerns, directed energy health effects, aerospace and undersea medicine, medical modeling, simulation, operational mission support, epidemiology and behavioral sciences.
