Nestlé bets big on premiumisation as consumers trade up

    • Premiumisation drives Nestlé growth through Coffee, Nutrition and Petcare
    • Global premium food market exceeds $573bn, growing at 6.25% CAGR
    • Nespresso and Purina support margins, loyalty and differentiation globally
    • Emerging Asian markets offer strongest premiumisation opportunities for Nestlé
    • Affordability pressures and private labels challenge long-term premium growth potential today

Premiumisation has become one of the food and beverage industry’s most powerful growth engines

From sweets and snacks to ready meals and recipe kits, manufacturers are investing in high-value products that promise quality, indulgence and differentiation

And it’s paying off, with the global premium food market valued at over $573bn (€502bn) and growing at a CAGR of 6.25% (Fortune Business Insights)

Looking to capitalise on this opportunity, Nestlé has embraced premiumisation, expanding its premium portfolio and investing in higher-value products across its business

“Premiumisation is a central growth driver for Nestlé, enabling brand differentiation, higher margins and reduced exposure to commoditised price competition,” says Sandra Ahrens, consumer goods data journalist at Statista

This strategy, she says, is most visible in Coffee, Nutrition and Petcare

    • In Coffee, premiumisation is driven by systems such as Nespresso, which follow a ‘razor-and-blade’ model – machines are sold at accessible prices to generate recurring, high-margin capsule sales and strong consumer lock-in
    • In Petcare, premiumisation has moved from niche to core, with around two-thirds of global sales in premium or super-premium segments, driven by rising pet ownership and the humanisation of pets, which increasingly receive more advanced and functional nutrition
    • And, in Nutrition, science‑based infant, medical and adult nutrition – including the expansion of Nestlé Health Science and launches such as Nestlé Vital for healthy ageing – anchor premium positioning.

While premiumisation is a major driver of new product development and sales, not all consumers are willing or able to pay more. As a result, Nestlé has been careful to ensure more affordable offerings remain available, balancing premium innovation with accessibility

Meanwhile, “middle- and higher-income households are the most important target group” for premium products. But income is only part of the equation

Consumers are also willing to pay more when a product delivers clear, tangible benefits that warrant the higher price tag

In Petcare, for example, engaged animal owners are increasingly treating their pets as members of the family and are prepared to pay more for products that offer science-based, tailored or therapeutic nutrition

The same is true in health and wellness. Consumers focused on maintaining their wellbeing are often willing to spend more on specialised infant, medical and functional nutrition products that provide targeted health benefits

Convenience can also be a powerful driver. In categories such as coffee and ready-to-drink beverages, consumers are often prepared to pay a premium for products that save time while still delivering quality and indulgence. For many, these products offer not just practicality, but also a small everyday treat, making the higher price easier to justify

As these consumer preferences continue to evolve, Nestlé sees significant scope to expand its premium offering around the world. Much of this potential lies in emerging Asian markets, where rising incomes, rapid urbanisation and a growing health-conscious middle class are fuelling demand for higher-value products

North America and Western Europe also remain key markets, however, with consumers in these regions continuing to trade up

Premiumisation extends well beyond stronger brand positioning for the Swiss multinational. It supports margins, strengthens customer loyalty and reduces reliance on price-driven competition

Premium products command higher prices and are often less vulnerable to commoditisation, meaning consumers are less likely to view them as interchangeable

Premiumisation also gives Nestlé greater pricing power, helping the company protect profitability in periods of inflation and commodity cost volatility

This is particularly evident in categories such as Coffee and Petcare, where consumers have demonstrated a willingness to pay more for products that offer superior quality, convenience or functional benefits. Consequently, premium brands like Nespresso and Purina have become key contributors to Nestlé’s overall performance

However, premiumisation is not without its challenges

While consumers continue to seek indulgence, quality and functionality, ongoing cost-of-living pressures mean affordability remains a key consideration for many households. In some categories, shoppers have traded down to lower-priced alternatives or private label products as food inflation squeezes budgets

This creates a delicate balancing act for manufacturers. Push prices too high and consumers may walk away, fail to differentiate products sufficiently and the premium proposition becomes harder to justify. For Nestlé, maintaining a broad portfolio that caters to both value-conscious and premium-seeking consumers will be essential

The challenge is particularly acute as private label retailers continue to improve product quality while maintaining a price advantage, creating additional competition for branded manufacturers seeking to move consumers up the value ladder

Despite the challenges, the long-term outlook for premiumisation remains strong

Rising incomes in emerging markets, growing interest in health and wellness, and continued consumer appetite for convenience and indulgence are expected to create new opportunities across categories

For Nestlé, that means continuing to invest in products that deliver clear added value, whether through superior ingredients, functional benefits, personalised nutrition or elevated consumer experiences

Its latest premiumisation push suggests the company remains confident that, even in a more price-sensitive environment, many consumers are still willing to pay more for products they believe are worth it
