S.C. (WCSC) — HCA Healthcare’s newest freestanding emergency room opened to patients in Mount Pleasant after a two-year wait
The Long Point ER is HCA Healthcare’s fifth freestanding ER in the Lowcountry and its first in Mount Pleasant. It is open 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year
HCA Healthcare officials said the new facility is about access, especially as the area continues to grow and health care needs to be closer to residents. Physicians who went to the open house said the location also makes it easier to refer patients to emergency care. The Mount Pleasant location was in progress with HCA Healthcare for over two years and aims to match the medical care needs of the community from within the town, which otherwise would be far for families
The community had the opportunity to tour the new building at an open house Saturday, where they met with healthcare professionals and saw the equipment first hand
Until Tuesday, the closest freestanding ER to Mount Pleasant was a 25-minute drive
HCA Healthcare Charleston has treated more than 192,000 patients system-wide, according to the health system, including nearly 35,000 children
Jeff Wilson, HCA Healthcare Charleston president and HCA Healthcare Trident Hospital CEO, said residents responded positively to the new location
“I do think a lot of individuals who live in the area were excited about just the ease of access, the ability to be able to be seen by a board-certified ER physician really quickly, based on where they live, work and play,” Wilson said. “This is going to be great. I’ll be able to get here easily from my home or from my work.”
HCA Healthcare said a second new freestanding ER is planned for Johns Island this fall. Hospital leaders said both projects are part of a broader push to reduce emergency wait times as the Lowcountry continues to grow
Wilson said quick access to emergency care can matter significantly in urgent situations
“When you’re dealing with an emergent situation, minutes matter,” Wilson said. “Whether you’re talking about a cardiac issue or maybe a stroke, or if you’ve been involved in a motor vehicle accident, or you have any type of condition where you’re experiencing signs and symptoms that are of concern, even respiratory issues, being able to access emergency services quickly is incredibly important.”
Residents will have full access to meet any of their needs as HCA Healthcare grows to have a place in every location that needs more help
