With the start of the school year approaching, public health officials are encouraging families to review safety practices with children who walk, bike or ride the bus to school
Children walking to school should use sidewalks when available, face traffic when sidewalks are unavailable, check for vehicles before crossing and avoid distractions while walking
Students riding bicycles should travel in the direction of traffic, stop before crossing streets, walk bicycles through crossings and wear properly fitted helmets and bright clothing
Families whose children ride school buses are encouraged to review safe boarding and exiting procedures, remain 6 feet from the curb while waiting and make sure children and drivers can see one another when crossing in front of a bus
