Nev. (KOLO) – Northern Nevada Public Health has declared a local public health emergency after the Bug, Stallion and Hawk Fires

Residents are being asked to refrain from moving debris at this time over safety concerns and to contact their insurance company if possible
Entities such as Washoe County and FEMA are working on developing guidance for safe debris removal in fire areas
“We understand that residents want to return to their homes and properties, but it is important to remember that ash and debris from homes destroyed by a wildfire can contain harmful materials,” said District Health Officer Dr. Chad Kingsley. “Sifting through ashes for items lost in the fire is different than debris removal. Hazardous materials can pose serious short- and long-term risks to individuals as well as impacts to public health and safety. Ensuring those materials are not disturbed is an urgent priority.”
They say residents should not attempt to handle or dispose of hazardous materials by themselves
