Over 70 animals rescued in suspected animal cruelty investigation

CARLISLE, N.Y. — The Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspected animal cruelty case after 78 animals were removed from a property in the Town of Carlisle over the weekend
Deputies responded to the residence around 8 p.m. Friday, July 24, after receiving a report about the welfare of animals on the property. According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies found multiple puppies suffering from severe medical conditions
Three critically ill puppies were transported to Upstate Veterinary Specialties in Latham for emergency treatment with assistance from Town of Carlisle Dog Control and the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley. Arrangements were also made to evaluate and treat the remaining animals
Deputies returned to the property Saturday morning with representatives from the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, the Susquehanna SPCA and Town of Carlisle Dog Control to continue the investigation and conduct additional medical evaluations. Authorities said more puppies were found in critical condition and were voluntarily surrendered by the owner to the Susquehanna SPCA before being taken for emergency veterinary treatment
As the investigation continued, deputies obtained a search warrant for the property, leading to the seizure of additional animals that authorities said required medical attention. The remaining animals were transported to the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley and the Susquehanna SPCA for care and evaluation
In total, 78 animals were removed from the property, including 17 surrendered puppies, 12 seized dogs, nine seized cats, 31 seized birds, five seized chickens and four seized horses
The Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active and no additional information is being released at this time. No criminal charges have been announced
