    BALTIMORE —

As kids head back to school and new routines are established, pediatricians are warning of the long-term consequences of obesity

According to statistics, about 1 in 5 children are obese, meaning they are too heavy for their height

Doctors say that can have long-term impacts

Mercy Medical Center pediatrician Dr. Ashanti Woods, told WBAL-TV 11 News obesity in children can lead to high blood pressure and cholesterol, sleep problems and even affect their behavior in school

While taller kids will have higher weights, Woods said parents should know their child’s numbers

He said one way to keep children healthy is by taking a look at the foods and drinks they consume

“One of the greatest causes of obesity or unhealthy weight is actually going to be sugary substances. So not only what we’re eating with our snacks, but then also some of the things we’re consuming drink-wise,” Woods said

Woods advised parents to look at the snacks and juice boxes kids consume

Another element parents should consider is their kids’ screen time

“As a parent, I’m busy. I can’t be with my kid all the time. So it’s easy when they’re on the screen. But I want to make sure that I’m not giving too much screen time,” Woods said

He advised parents to look into non-digital activities to do with their kids

“I want to model excellent behaviors. I want to try to get my family out with activity. We all go into the park at the same time so we can walk around, and it doesn’t have to be hard,” Woods added

Exercise is another activity families can do

“We just want kids moving for about 60 minutes a day. Sounds like a lot, but when you add up in the 24-hour period, it’s not that much,” Woods said

Woods said school age is the perfect time to have these conversations with kids

He said parents who need additional support in managing obesity can talk with a nutritionist. Medication and surgery are options for some kids as a last resort
