BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. (WLOX) — A physical education initiative called Move to Learn took over the gym at Holy Trinity Catholic School Thursday morning, bringing a 45-minute program to students in pre-K through second grade
During the session, students danced, moved, and played the bongos alongside their teachers
“Move to Learn is a teaching tool. It’s not a panacea, it’s not a cure-all, but it does a number of things in the classroom. It helps with focus and concentration,” said Coach Larry Calhoun, who leads the program
The program was designed in Mississippi for Mississippi students and teachers
“Teachers are doing some tremendous work with the students in Mississippi,” said Calhoun. “Reading, writing, math scores are up significantly.”

Calhoun said the goal of the program is to help children associate learning with something positive
“We’re fortunate to have this opportunity because our children need some joy in their life,” Calhoun said. “They need to associate learning with something very positive and not something punitive.”
Calhoun travels across Mississippi’s 82 counties, logging between 185 and 195 days a year on the road
