PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) —At Harbinger MMA Gym in Portland, it’s about far more than learning how to fight. It’s about building discipline, resilience and a supportive community that helps people grow both inside and outside the gym
For Xavier Foster, MMA wasn’t always part of the plan
“I got into the sport incredibly late,” Foster said. “I started at 25 years old, and I never thought that I would start a sport like this at all. I played a little bit of football and basketball, but one thing led to another with me meeting Harbinger, and from there I just fell in love with it.”
That passion quickly turned into a lifestyle fueled by hard work and accountability
“I love this because it’s less talk and more action,” Foster said. “Anyone can say they can fight. Anyone can say they can do really, really good. But stepping in here and getting in the ring takes a lot of dedication and hard work. Without my teammates and coaches, I wouldn’t even be able to do it.”

For coach and owner Jake Izsó, the gym’s impact extends well beyond competition. While developing skilled fighters is important, helping shape better people is what drives him
“You kind of want to give back, and you want to see some of these other guys develop,” Izsó said. “You want to create a good space for some of these younger men to really change. It was really important to me to see younger people grow in what I thought is a healthy way and develop into good fighters and good men.”
He believes mixed martial arts teaches lessons that carry over into everyday life
“I think the sport teaches you a lot about yourself,” Izsó said

Foster agrees, saying the sport has challenged him in ways he never expected
“It shows you if you think you’re as good at something as you are, wait until you start this sport,” Foster said. “You’ll see how long you’re willing to go through pure difficulty and still stay with it every single day.”
Foster will have another opportunity to showcase the lessons he’s learned when he steps into the cage for his sixth amateur fight in Tri-Cities, Washington on July 25th. Representing Harbinger MMA, Foster says every bout is about more than earning a victory, it’s a chance to reflect the discipline, preparation and teamwork that have shaped his journey since joining the Portland gym
Coaches and fighters at Harbinger MMA Gym said success isn’t measured solely by wins and losses. It’s measured by the character, perseverance and confidence built through every training session. Qualities that last long after the final bell
