WASHINGTON — Exercise sets off activity throughout the body. Muscles work, breathing quickens and the heart pumps faster. Beneath those familiar changes, organs and tissues are also exchanging chemical signals

The type of workout may shape that internal conversation. Researchers recently compared the molecular responses to brief, all-out exercise and longer, moderate exercise.

Exercise Intensity Modulates Interorgan Communication and Is Associated with Cardiometabolic Health Outcomes in Humans

Researchers at Rockefeller University, working with collaborators from several institutions, conducted a study that was published in the Cell Reports Medicine Journal in August 2026.

The goal was to understand how exercise alters the molecular messages that travel between organs and tissues, and how varying exercise levels affect the proteins and other molecules involved in this communication.

ParticipantsThe main comparison used samples from 19 healthy, active men with an average age of 28. Ten completed sprint-interval exercise, while nine completed moderate-intensity exercise

A subset later completed eight weeks of training: seven in the sprint group and six in the moderate group. The researchers also analyzed data from nine trained runners and recruited 11 healthy, moderately active adults for a separate experiment examining fat tissue

Trial DesignThe cycling groups completed one of two workouts:

    • Sprint-interval exercise consisted of six 30-second, all-out cycling bouts, with four minutes of recovery between each one.
    • Moderate-intensity exercise consisted of 90 minutes of continuous cycling at a pace near the participants’ first lactate threshold.

Blood was collected before, immediately after, and three hours after each workout. After eight weeks of training, the cycling groups repeated the same exercise and blood collection process

The running group ran for two hours on a treadmill at 60% of their maximum oxygen capacity. In another part of the research, participants completed a treadmill test that increased in difficulty until exhaustion, with abdominal fat tissue collected before and three hours afterward

Data CollectedResearchers measured thousands of proteins in blood plasma and analyzed metabolites, which are small molecules produced as the body processes substances

They used gene and protein databases, muscle samples, and laboratory experiments to predict where exercise-responsive proteins originated and which tissues they might affect. The team also exposed human fat cells to blood plasma collected before and after exercise to observe their responses

Finally, the researchers compared the exercise-responsive proteins with health data from 53,026 U.K. Biobank participants. This allowed them to look for associations between those proteins and cardiovascular or metabolic conditions

ResultsExercise intensity produced distinct molecular patterns.
