Welcome to the Public Health Corner: UV Safety Awareness Month
Warm summer days encourage many of us to spend more time outdoors, whether we’re working in the yard, attending sporting events, visiting the pool, or enjoying community activities. UV Safety Awareness Month serves as a reminder that while sunshine has benefits, too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can increase the risk of skin damage, eye damage, and skin cancer
UV rays from the sun can affect the skin even on cloudy or cooler days. Over time, repeated exposure can cause premature aging of the skin and increase the risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Children and teens are especially important to protect, as severe sunburns during childhood can increase skin cancer risk later in life
Fortunately, there are simple steps everyone can take to stay safe in the sun. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply it every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating. Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves or specialized UV protective shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses that block UV rays. Whenever possible, seek shade during peak sunlight hours, typically between 10 am and 4 pm
It is also important to stay mindful of UV exposure during outdoor activities such as youth sports, county fairs, festivals, and family gatherings. Planning ahead by packing sunscreen, water, hats, and other sun protection items can help keep everyone safe while enjoying summer activities
UV Safety Awareness Month is a reminder that protecting your skin and eyes is an important part of overall health. By practicing sun safety and making it part of your daily routine, you can reduce your risk of sun-related health problems and enjoy the outdoors safely all summer long
