He gained 0.45kg due to lack of sleep for 80 minutes a day.”Enough sleep is essential even when managing weight.”
Researchers at Columbia University in the U.S. have published a study showing that a lack of sleep for about an hour every day can lead to weight gain. It was found that not only felt tired, but also decreased activity and increased waist circumference
According to the international journal “Annals of Internal Medicine” on the 20th, researchers at Columbia University Medical School and the Institute of Human Nutrition analyzed the effects of sleep deprivation on weight and body changes in 95 adults
The subjects of the study were adults over the age of 20 who usually sleep more than 7 hours a day, and the researchers asked participants to delay their bedtime by 1 hour and 30 minutes for 6 weeks. The actual average sleep time decreased by 78.4 minutes per day
As a result, participants who were sleep deprived increased their weight by an average of 0.45 kg. The waist circumference increased by 0.52 cm on average, and the whole body volume also increased by 0.56 liters. Leptin levels, a hormone involved in appetite and energy balance, were also confirmed to have risen
The notable change was the amount of activity. The sleep-deprived participants spent an average of 17.2 minutes longer per day sitting down. In particular, men and postmenopausal women increased sedentary time by about 30 minutes. The researchers noted that physical activity did not increase despite increased waking time
The researchers analyzed that lack of sleep may have caused fatigue, reducing physical activity, and such lifestyle changes may have led to weight gain. He also explained that lack of sleep leads to looking for sweets and high-fat foods, and can affect blood sugar control and insulin resistance
“If a lack of sleep of less than an hour and a half every day lasts for a year, it can lead to clinically meaningful weight gain,” said Columbia University Professor Paris Juraikat, who led the study. “We need to include sufficient sleep strategies for weight management and cardiovascular disease prevention programs.”
The researchers emphasized that although the study was limited in confirming changes in body composition in a short period of time, it shows that diet and exercise, as well as sufficient sleep, are important factors in weight management
