Inside Rosie O’Donnell’s 60-lb weight loss journey

Rosie O’Donnell has never shied away from talking about her own struggles, especially when it comes to weight, body image, and the stress of living under a spotlight. She’s spent years being brutally honest about how all of that shaped her life, but now she’s sharing something entirely new. The Emmy-winning comedian and actress recently opened up about losing almost 60 pounds, and she says the best thing about it isn’t what you might expect

In an interview with People, at age 64, Rosie explained that things started to shift after she got a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Her doctor prescribed her Mounjaro (tirzepatide), a medication originally meant for diabetes but now widely recognized for its weight-loss effects. According to Rosie, Mounjaro, along with some major lifestyle changes, helped her take control of her health. As per the comedian, she finally feels healthier and more confident, and the constant mental noise about food isn’t ruling her life anymore. This all comes at a time when GLP-1 medications, like Mounjaro, are changing how people think about obesity and diabetes. These drugs are sparking a lot of talk about who can access them, how safe they are over time, and whether they might be used too casually.

Rosie’s always been upfront about how painful it can be to get picked apart in the media about her body. The criticism took a toll on her confidence, and looking back, she wishes she’d spent less time worrying about how she looked. For example, when she was shooting “A League of Their Own,” director Penny Marshall asked her to drop 20 pounds for the role. That request stung, and Rosie remembers snapping, “You think I carry it around for fun?” Now, she weighs about the same as she did back then but says she’s much healthier and a lot stronger because she’s focused on her well-being, not just her appearance.

    ‘Mounjaro changed my life’

Talking to People, Rosie didn’t hold back: “Mounjaro changed my life.” She recalled starting the weekly injections about three years ago, right after her diabetes diagnosis. While losing weight was a big deal, what really shocked her was how the drug changed her relationship with food

She explained that Mounjaro turned off what many GLP-1 users call “food noise” — that endless loop of cravings, hunger, and thinking about eating. For someone who’s struggled since childhood, Rosie says the peace and quiet in her head was just life-altering

    4/7

    The lifestyle changes that helped

Lifestyle changes played a big role too. When Rosie left Los Angeles, she lost access to a personal chef and began cooking at home for her family. That shift made her rethink her eating patterns. Cooking for herself meant she could control what and how much she was eating. She’s quick to point out that medication was only one part of her overall transformation

    5/7

    Managing the transformation

Most people think it’s just the weight loss, and that’s about it. But shedding almost 60 pounds brought an unexpected challenge. Rosie was left with loose skin on her face, which is a common side effect after big weight loss. Earlier this year, she decided to get a deep-plane facelift to help with that, a procedure that cost her nearly $90,000. Rosie admits she struggled with the choice, mainly because she’s always had strong feminist feelings about cosmetic surgery

However, in the end, she went through with it. She wanted how she looked to match how she was feeling inside. After losing the weight, her face started to sag, and she looked sad. She didn’t see the surgery as trying to look younger; to her, it was about claiming her own body and confidence

    6/7

    What experts think

Doctors familiar with these medications say Rosie’s story checks out. Mounjaro, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, mimics hormones that regulate blood sugar and hunger, making people feel full faster and for longer. It was first designed for Type 2 diabetes, but it’s also been proven in studies to help with weight loss. That said, health experts warn these drugs aren’t miracle fixes. They work best alongside good nutrition, exercise, and ongoing medical supervision. Nausea and other stomach issues are pretty common, and not everyone’s a candidate. There’s also a warning for anyone who would use them solely to slim down without a doctor’s input.

Rosie O’Donnell: embarking on a ‘new’ life

For Rosie, the win isn’t just the smaller number on the scale; it’s the emotional freedom she’s never known before. Even simple things, like buying clothes that fit, throw her off. For so long, she obsessed over her body before every on-camera moment, but finally, she feels comfortable in her own skin. She’s spending less energy on worrying and more on just living her life

Right now, Rosie says she’s in a brand-new chapter. She’s splitting her time between Ireland and the U.S., reconnecting with family, and gearing up for her one-woman show, “Common Knowledge.” She feels more alive in her 60s than ever before
