ATLANTA — One of the strongest stories at last month’s Casual Market Atlanta was the category’s continued aptitude for adapting to consumers, who increasingly view the outdoors as a staging point for how they live rather than simply as a place
Tuuci, traditionally a shade-focused brand, showcased its own move toward a broader take on outdoor lifestyles, debuting new furniture and accessories alongside the shade solutions for which it has always been known
Company leaders told Furniture Today that it is just the start of the brand’s strategy to cast a wider net with specialty retailers and their customers

A retail-focused market
While Tuuci’s product presentation encompassed multiple outdoor categories, its showroom traffic remained rooted in the specialty retail relationships that have long supported the brand director of sales
“More than half of the attendees we’re seeing are our retail dealers, most of whom we already have relationships with,” Canales said. “There is also a smaller percentage of people we don’t yet work with, which is great because it gives us an opportunity to explore those possibilities.”
Designers represented a smaller portion of traffic during the July event, which was shifted from its traditional dates because of World Cup activity in Atlanta
“I haven’t seen too many designers at this show, and I think that may be related to the change in timing,” Canales explained. “The World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime event happening here, so we had to make an adjustment, but we’ll be back to normal next year.”
For the retail dealers who attended, Tuuci emphasized the breadth and flexibility of its growing assortment. Showroom vignettes paired materials, product types and decorative details to demonstrate how retailers and their customers could create coordinated — but not necessarily matching — outdoor settings
“We want to show customers all the options they can mix and match because we have so many materials available,” Canales said. “We want displays like this to provide inspiration for what they can create.”
“We’ve also introduced more poufs with details such as fringe and tassels, along with 14 new collections featuring lighter, thermally welded aluminum,” she added. “Those introductions include the three-seat Calico with coordinating side tables and the Helios chaise lounges.”
Expanding beyond shade

Tuuci’s evolution into furniture is still relatively recent, but it grows out of a longer-term ambition to expand the brand beyond the shade category. Its acquisition of Pavilion helped establish a connection to furniture, while Tuuci founder Dougan Clarke continued developing his own ideas for the category
“Furniture is still very new for us; we’ve had furniture in the line for about two years,” Canales said. “We purchased Pavilion, which is now our sister brand, around 2017 or 2018, but expanding beyond shade had always been a passion project for Dougan
“He wanted people to think of Tuuci as a one-stop shop for outdoor products, and eventually he decided to make that push into furniture a reality,” she continued. “He thought very diligently about what he wanted to see that he hadn’t already seen in the industry, and that’s how the furniture came about.”
Among the new introductions was Milan, a lower-profile sun lounger that brings a European-influenced silhouette and deeper cushioning to the company’s assortment
“Milan is essentially a more European take on our sun lounger,” Canales explained. “It sits a little lower to the ground and has a 10-inch cushion, compared with the approximately 5-inch cushion on our standard sun lounger, giving it a very different look from the model we introduced about two years ago.”
Tuuci also broadened its dining offering with Gather, a modular interpretation of the picnic table designed to work with multiple seating options

“The Gather table represents an expansion of our dining collection and gives the traditional picnic table an elevated treatment,” Canales said. “It can be paired with a backless bench, a bench with a back or the Canyon crew chairs we introduced last year.”
“It is available in any of our Aluma-Teak or powder-coated finishes,” she added. “The idea is to provide that traditional-style table in a more elevated look.”
Accessories and shade still matter
Despite the expansion into furniture, Tuuci continued to develop the shade products at the core of its identity. At market, the company extended its Cupola family with a cantilever model featuring decorative details intended to give the functional shade structure more personality
“What we’re standing beneath is our Cupola cantilever, which features a popped wind vent and a decorative valance,” Canales said. “We’ve added wooden tassels to give it more of a novelty look.”
“We introduced the center-post Cupola a couple of years ago, and it has done so well for us that we decided to expand the family,” she explained. “That led us to create the cantilever version shown here.”

That emphasis on personality extended into accessories, including outdoor poufs offered with different surface treatments and embellishments. The designs combine decorative elements with the stability and functionality needed for outdoor settings
“We’ve introduced several different ‘personalities,’ as we like to call them, featuring different designs, fringe and leather tassels,” Canales said. “They’re made with outdoor fabrics and are weighted enough that they won’t tip over, while still being light enough to move, and they also spin.”
Movement also emerged as a feature within the company’s seating assortment, giving Tuuci another way to add functionality without disrupting the products’ clean profiles
“We’ve also added an upgraded feature to our lounge chairs, which now swivel,” Canales said. “They have a very clean base that comes in the same finish as the chair itself and provides easy movement all the way around.”
“There are so many favorites,” she added, “but the feature I was probably most excited to introduce was movement.”
