    Social Security added 14 conditions to its Compassionate Allowances list, speeding disability claims for people with these severe illnesses.Dreamstime/TNS/TNS

    Fourteen conditions have been added to the Social Security Administration’s Compassionate Allowances list, allowing for a faster application process for those impacted by the diseases. 

    Since the list began in October 2008, more than 1.2 million people have been approved through this process that accelerates disability benefits claims for people with certain diagnoses. The list now includes 314 medical conditions, including the ones added Tuesday.

    “Social Security is strengthening our disability programs and making the disability determination process better, faster and higher-quality to serve the American public,” said Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano in a statement from the agency. “The Compassionate Allowances initiative cuts through red tape and allows us to deliver support to individuals who experience life-changing diagnoses and need help fast.”

    What conditions were added to the SSA’s Compassionate Allowances list?

    • Adenylosuccinate Lyase Deficiency – Neonatal Form and Type 1 – a rare inherited metabolic disorder leading to developmental delays• Aicardi Syndrome – genetic disorder impacting girls• Baraitser-Winter Syndrome – a genetic disorder impacting the brain and facial structure• Beare-Stevenson Cutis Gyrata Syndrome – a genetic disorder that impacts skin disorders and the premature fusion of certain bones of the skull • Bohring-Opitz Syndrome – genetic disorder resulting in intellectual disability, developmental delay and seizures. • CASK-Related Gene Disorders – a group of genetic disorders that affect brain development.• Hepatosplenic T-Cell Lymphoma – an aggressive form of blood cancer• Lafora Disease – <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/lafora-disease” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>a progressive neurological condition that causes seizures and intellectual decline in adolescents.• Malignant Migrating Partial Seizures of Infancy (MMPSI) – an epilepsy syndrome found in babies• OPHN1 Syndrome – is a rare syndromic form of cerebellar dysgenesis• Primary Cardiac Sarcoma – a rare type of cancerous tumor in the heart• Primary Intracranial Malignant Melanoma – a rare and aggressive type of brain tumor• Uveal Melanoma – with Metastases – eye cancer that has spread to other parts of the body• Warburg Micro Syndrome – rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder impacting the eyes and growth

    The disability declaration is made through the agency obtaining medical records.

    SSA REFORM:Final July Social Security payments arrive Wednesday as Congress weighs reform

    “The agency uses technology to identify potential CAL conditions and expedite claims processing,” according to an agency news release. “Although not available in every claim, through the Health IT program, SSA securely receives electronic medical records, allowing for adjudicators to make faster and more accurate decisions.”

    To be eligible for Social Security disability benefits, individuals must have worked in jobs covered by Social Security or have a medical condition that meets Social Security’s strict definition of disability
