Pittsburgh set to become rare disease research hub with $25M investment

Pittsburgh’s newest research endeavor unites the city’s artificial intelligence, health sciences and manufacturing prowess toward developing new therapies for rare diseases. The initiative includes a $25 million investment from the city’s largest philanthropic foundation and a partnership with a research group founded by a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer

The funds will launch Rare Ventures, a first-of-its-kind philanthropy platform designed to give researchers venture investment to bring research to market
Rare diseases affect more than 400 million people worldwide, more than cancers or AIDs. But with more than 10,000 known rare diseases, the vast majority have no approved treatment. Rare Ventures has pledged to translate decades of scientific breakthroughs into therapies
Rare Ventures is a collaboration among the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, UPMC Vision Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford Medicine and ElevateBio. The team also includes EB Research Partnership (EBRP), a nonprofit supporting research to cure Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare genetic skin disease. EBRP was co-founded by Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder
“Every patient deserves hope, and every scientific breakthrough deserves the opportunity to reach the people who need it most,” said Vedder and his wife Jill in a statement. “It’s about taking lessons learned from one disease and building something that can help families facing thousands of rare diseases.”
Rare Ventures will build upon EBRP’s “venture philanthropy” approach, which borrows techniques from venture capital investment. The strategy sidesteps the complex government research grant system in favor of investment from venture philanthropy groups. Revenue generated by approved therapies would be put back into the project, the group said in a statement
“Rare Ventures is an ambitious effort to do for rare-disease medicine what venture capital did for technology: creating the infrastructure, capital, expertise, and partnerships required to transform promising ideas into accessible treatments for the hundreds of million people suffering from rare diseases without hope of a cure,” the group said
In a statement Wednesday, Rare Ventures declined to disclose how many rare diseases it will initially focus on, but said the platform would grow to support therapy development for hundreds of disease communities over time
The initiative will support therapeutic advancements in genetic, pediatric, neurological, metabolic and ophthalmologic conditions, according to a news release
The Mellon investment will build the endeavor’s foundational infrastructure, including patient data platforms, basic and translational research programs, therapeutic development, clinical trial innovation and strategic partnerships across academia, industry and healthcare
It will also build out an AI platform called Curator designed to connect patients to specialists, clinical trials and research opportunities while providing researchers the data needed to accelerate development of new therapies
“Rare diseases have long suffered from fragmented data, limited patient populations, and barriers that make research and clinical development extraordinarily difficult,” said Dr. Jean Tang, dermatology professor at Stanford Medicine
“The ability to responsibly connect patient data, genomic insights, clinical expertise, and emerging technologies creates an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate discovery and improve outcomes for patients worldwide.”
Rare Ventures will partner closely with Pitt Bioforge, a $100 million cell and gene therapy biomanufacturing center developed by ElevateBio and the University of Pittsburgh. Christopher Murphy, ElevateBio CEO, said in a statement that Pittsburgh’s growing leadership in advanced therapies and manufacturing will yield breakthrough medical innovation
“The future of medicine depends on our ability to translate scientific breakthroughs into safe and effective treatments that can be available for all,” Murphy said
