    Nutritional Brewer's Yeast in milk

Could nutritional yeast, affectionately known as “nooch” by those who partake, be the next superfood?

The dry, yellow powder derived from deactivated yeast used to make bread has grown a following among vegans and vegetarians who swear by its strong umami flavor, which can add depth to savory dishes such as sauces or dairy-free mac and cheeses

Nutritional yeast derives from Saccharomyces cerevisiae- brewers’ yeast- which is fermented and harvested

The yeast, which has as much protein as an egg white in a spoonful, is heated and dried to kill living cells, and then nutrients such as vitamin B12 are added

The heat neutralizes yeast’s leavening properties, leaving a cheesy, creamy flavor in its wake. The amino acid glutamate also contributes to the umami flavor found in tomatoes, meat, oysters, and mushrooms

The product was first sold in the 1950s, following a discovery by chemists that leftover brewer’s yeast had high nutritional value

Dieticians say that nutritional yeast’s health benefits derive from its high vitamin B12 content, which is essential for helping the body convert food into energy. A deficiency can cause extreme tiredness

A tablespoon contains 7.1 micrograms of the nutrient. The CDC and Institute of Medicine recommend a daily Vitamin B12 intake of 2.4 micrograms (mcg) for typical adult men and women, so the dosage is over 4 times the recommended amount

This means that the health benefits can support vegans, who, studies, suggest that 52% of those following that diet are deficient in B12, but also meat eaters alike

According to dietician Sophie Medilian, the yeast could be a good salad topper to keep one satiated until your next meal, and help muscle growth if you’re a gym goer, the Daily Mail reports

Furthermore, it could add a few grams of fiber to your diet; the yeast is less that 1% of the daily recommended fiber intake, but it could add up if you’re eating it multiple times a day

Medlin cautioned that those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome should be conservative with their nutritional yeast usage, as it is known to cause bloating and gas

The bloating is likely linked to the non-digestible fibers in the yeast, which ferment in the gut and release excess gases

“The B vitamin levels in some products are very high,” she told the outlet. “Anyone also taking B supplements should be wary and limit their use.”

Too much B vitamin can cause adverse side effects such as stomach upsets, skin rashes, and dramatic changes in blood pressure

“It’s not suitable for some migraine sufferers as it contains tyramine, which is a trigger for some people,” Medlin added
