Anti-aging influencer and tech millionaire Bryan Johnson has reignited a long-running public debate over his relationship with food, posting on X that he rejects being told he has an eating disorder, arguing instead that what critics see as pathology is actually years of disciplined mastery over what he eats. “People say I have an eating disorder. Because I’ve achieved perfect discipline of what I eat. It’s taken me years to achieve this mastery,” Johnson wrote, questioning why mastery in food intake is often pathologised when excellence in other fields is celebrated.
What Bryan Johnson said
In the post, Johnson wrote that people accuse him of having an eating disorder because he has achieved what he describes as perfect discipline in his diet, something he says took years to build. He questioned why that discipline gets labeled a disorder rather than celebrated as skill, drawing comparisons to other domains where extreme consistency is praised rather than pathologized: a straight-A student isn’t told to get some Cs to avoid a “grade disorder,” he argued, an NBA player isn’t told to miss shots to avoid a “shooting disorder,” and an engineer isn’t told to introduce bugs to avoid a “code disorder.” He said he holds himself accountable to his biomarkers and adjusts his health protocol based on data, while acknowledging that any pursuit of mastery, including this one, can tip into unhealthy territory. Even so, he maintained that self-control over food intake deserves the same respect as mastery of any other craft.
Data‑driven accountability
Johnson emphasised that his approach is not rigid dogma but biomarker‑driven. He said he continually adjusts his protocol based on measurable health data, treating food intake as a craft worthy of respect. “Like any quest for mastery, this one can steer into unhealthy territory. But self‑control over food intake is as worthy of respect as mastery of any other craft,” he concluded.
