Turns out, “eat your veggies” wasn’t just something your parents demanded at dinner time to annoy you. Not only does a <a href="https://www.mensjournal.com/food/registered-dietitian-best-vegetable-for-weight-loss” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>vegetable-rich diet fuel your body with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds that support overall health, but it may also help lower your risk of serious health conditions like colon cancer. Fiber adds bulk to stool, keeps things moving through the digestive tract, and reduces the amount of time potentially harmful compounds spend in contact with the intestinal lining. Vegetables also contain an array of beneficial plant compounds, such as polyphenols and carotenoids, that support a healthy gut.

Every vegetable brings something different to your plate, but certain ones stand out for their potential role in reducing colon cancer risk. If colon health is on your mind, look no further. We spoke with Ritu Nahar, M.D., a board-certified gastroenterologist with Allied Digestive Health, to pinpoint the vegetables worth eating every week to better protect colon health

Best Vegetables to Lower Colon Cancer Risk

    Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage contain fiber and glucosinolates, which are broken down into compounds such as sulforaphane. These compounds have been studied for their potential anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects, making cruciferous vegetables worth a couple of spots on your grocery list

One large study of over 97,000 people found that those who consumed about 20 to 40 grams of cruciferous vegetables per day had a 17 percent lower risk of developing colorectal cancer compared with those who ate the least. Getting that amount each day can be relatively easy if you’re intentional about adding a serving to your daily meals or snacks

    Leafy Greens

“Leafy greens like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard provide fiber, folate, carotenoids, vitamin K, and other beneficial plant compounds. Their high nutrient density makes them an excellent foundation for a colon-healthy diet,” Nahar says

Leafy greens also contain chlorophyll, which can bind to potentially harmful compounds produced during the digestion of red meat, helping prevent cellular damage to the colon lining. Research has also linked higher dietary folate intake with a modestly lower risk of colorectal cancer. In one study, individuals who regularly consumed red meat and ate few vegetables had lower markers of DNA damage and inflammation after consuming about one cup of cooked leafy greens daily for four weeks

    Carrots

Carrots are rich in fiber and carotenoids, including beta-carotene, which has antioxidant properties that may help protect cells from oxidative damage. Carrots also provide other plant compounds, including polyacetylenes, which have been studied for their potential anti-inflammatory effects

In one study of over 57,000 people, those who ate more than 32 grams of raw carrots per day had a 17 percent lower risk of colorectal cancer compared with those who consumed the least. Carrots are pretty simple to add to your diet, making for a tasty snack or crunchy side dish at dinner

    Beans and Legumes

“While technically legumes rather than vegetables, I would strongly include them in my top four,” Nahar says. “Lentils, chickpeas, black beans, and kidney beans are among the besto provide resistant starch and other substrates that gut bacteria ferment into short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate.”

The fiber supports beneficial gut bacteria, which produce butyrate and other compounds that help maintain a healthy colon. Legumes also provide vitamin B6, and higher intake has been linked with a lower risk of colorectal cancer
