The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) has endorsed the agreement for the establishment of the Committee for the Wellbeing of the People of the Sea of the Port Bay of Algeciras, a coordinating body among the institutions and entities linked to the maritime-port sector aimed at improving the attention to the crews arriving at the Algeciras enclave
Pedro García, director of Port Operations of the State, an entity integrated into the National Committee for the Wellbeing of the People of the Sea and which promotes the extension of this collaboration model to ports of general interest, attended the event. Alongside him signed the representatives of the entities that will integrate the new committee: the APBA itself, the Maritime Captaincy of Algeciras, Stella Maris, the ITF, APEMAR, AESBA, and the Bay of Algeciras Pilots Corporation
The committee will function as a coordinating and collaborative body to ensure that the Port Bay of Algeciras has adequate welfare services for the people of the sea. It will also serve as a stable forum for dialogue to detect needs, propose solutions, and articulate cooperation among the various public and private entities with competencies or activities in the port environment
The president of the APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, has stated that with the establishment of this body, “the APBA reinforces its commitment to the social dimension of the port and to the wellbeing of the people who work in the maritime sector,” with special attention to the crews that dock at the Algeciras facilities
For his part, the chaplain of the Port of Algeciras, Father Jovannie Postrano, has thanked for the support received “to attend to the people of the sea, who are responsible for 90% of the global trade movement.”
The initiative responds to the recommendations of the Maritime Labor Convention of 2006 of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which contemplates the creation of welfare committees in ports to ensure adequate facilities and services for seafarers during their stay on land. With the signing of this agreement, the Port Bay of Algeciras has a stable instrument to coordinate the institutional response to the needs of the crews arriving at its terminals
