Anupama Parameswaran has been making headlines after opening up about her healing journey following a controlling relationship. The actress, who has worked across Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema, spoke about the difficult experience in a recent candid chat. In the second part of the interview, the Mareechika actress discussed the emotional and physical toll of the relationship and how she eventually began to break away from it.

Anupama Parameswaran recalls the impact of toxic relationship

During her conversation with Dhanya Varma, Anupama described the relationship as an experience of “narcissistic abuse”. She explained that it followed a repeated pattern where moments of affection were followed by conflict, emotional distress and reconciliation.According to the actress, the situation began affecting both her mental and physical well-being. She said she experienced extreme anxiety, panic attacks, blackouts and major weight loss. There were also times when she felt physically unwell after conversations, including episodes of vomiting and an inability to eat.Anupama recalled that the impact became so severe that it began affecting her professional life as well. She said her right eye started twitching and there was a point when shooting had to be stopped because of her condition. The actress also revealed that, “All of a sudden my lacrimal gland, it got swollen and I had to get surgery done… There was a lot more. There are wounds in my body, not physical abuse, and issues in my body that can never be healed- physical and mental.”

‘It was like a spider web’: Anupama on gaslighting

Anupama explained that leaving the relationship was not as simple as people outside the situation might assume. She compared the experience to being caught in a “spider web”, where gaslighting and manipulation made it difficult to recognise what was happening and take a step back. She said she eventually started noticing inconsistencies, catching lies and confronting the person. As she became more aware of the pattern, she also began understanding how the blame was repeatedly shifted towards her.The situation eventually reached a breaking point after Anupama noticed something that shocked her. She said the matter escalated to such an extent that both families became involved. According to her, the relationship’s carefully maintained facade eventually fell apart. The actress also recalled a moment when she felt she could see the person’s true nature. She said that during their final conversations, she felt the mask had come off and she could finally see the behaviour more clearly. In the earlier part of the same interview, Anupama used three popular Tamil film characters, Remo, Anniyan and Ambi, to explain what she described as the unpredictable behaviour she experienced. She said the person could be extremely loving at one moment, turn harsh and uncaring the next, and later return with apologies and promises to change.Looking back at the two years she spent in the relationship, Anupama said she felt she had not grown during that period and instead felt that she had gradually lost a part of herself.

Anupama Parameswaran and Dhruv Vikram dating rumours

Anupama did not reveal the identity of the person she was referring to in the interview. Earlier, dating rumours surrounding Anupama and Dhruv surfaced in 2025 when they were working together on Mari Selvaraj’s Bison Kaalamaadan. The speculation intensified after an unverified photograph allegedly showing the two actors sharing a kiss circulated online.Neither Anupama nor Dhruv has publicly confirmed that they were in a relationship or addressed the claims about their alleged romance.Meanwhile, on the work front, Anupama continues to be active across South Indian cinema. She has Bhogi and Crazy Kalyanam among her upcoming projects.Add ET Logo
