The diagnosed prevalence of type 2 diabetes is expected to increase across the seven major markets (7MM) by 2035, alongside a growing burden of comorbidities

The number of diagnosed prevalent cases of type 2 diabetes (T2D) across the 7MM is expected to rise from 54.5 million in 2025 to 61.2 million by 2035, representing an annual growth rate of 1.2%

GlobalData’s Type 2 Diabetes (T2D): Epidemiology Forecast to 2035 report identifies hypertension as the most prevalent diagnosed comorbidity among patients with T2D across the markets analysed

The US is expected to account for the highest number of diagnosed prevalent T2D cases in 2035, with just under 29.6 million cases. Japan and the five major European markets – France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK – are forecast to have approximately 8.6 million and 22.9 million cases, respectively

Higher body mass index (BMI), sedentary lifestyles, diets high in processed foods and ageing populations are among the factors contributing to the increasing burden of T2D. GlobalData epidemiologists identified particularly high prevalence rates in Germany and the US, which may be partly associated with higher rates of obesity and ageing populations.

The report also found that the prevalence of diagnosed comorbidities varied across the 7MM, with hypertension accounting for the largest proportion of cases with a diagnosed comorbidity. Germany recorded the highest proportion of comorbid hypertension

“Hypertension is a common comorbidity worldwide, as it is associated with a higher BMI, lower physical activity levels, and a poor diet.”

    -Judith Visser, Epidemiologist at GlobalData

“Hypertension is a common comorbidity worldwide, as it is associated with a higher BMI, lower physical activity levels, and a poor diet,” said Judith Visser, Epidemiologist at GlobalData, “The high comorbidity burden in patients with type 2 diabetes shows the importance of proper disease management.”

The findings highlight the increasing need for comprehensive approaches to T2D management as obesity and population ageing continue to influence disease prevalence and associated comorbidity burden globally
