Ky. (WKYT) – Hundreds of families turned out Saturday for UK HealthCare’s Back to School Extravaganza at Consolidated Baptist Church, where more than a dozen organizations partnered to provide free health and educational re
The event was organized by UK HealthCare’s Office of Health Disparities and offered free school supplies, eye exams, physical exams, and public safety lessons. Face painting and a bounce house were also on hand for attendees
UK HealthCare Chief Health Disparities Officer Tukea Talbert said the event was designed to reach underserved communities where they live
“We do have some medical deserts. We do have some challenges based on where people live in terms of life expectancy. For instance, there is an 11-year gap in life expectancy from birth to death when you look at the various zip codes in Lexington,” Talbert said
Talbert said Consolidated Baptist Church was chosen because families could reach it by car, bus, or on foot

Attendee Kayla Soper described the event’s impact on her family
“It’s amazing. It feels like we still have help in the world,” Soper said

“It gives everybody the opportunity to have an equal learning experience and have the same materials and not get left behind,” Sweat said
Talbert framed the event in broader terms
“It’s an investment in our future right, when we invest in our children,” she said
