Va. (WVIR) -UVA Health’s mobile mammography unit has partnered with Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry to offer free breast cancer screenings to community members in need
Women who visited the pantry Friday were able to receive a mammogram, sample healthy foods, meet with a nutrition counselor, and pick up their monthly groceries — all in a single visit
Jane Colony Mills, executive director of Loaves and Fishes, said the partnership is designed to address obstacles that prevent people from accessing health care
“People who don’t have health insurance or don’t have enough money to buy their own food, that’s a barrier to accessing something that is very important for good health,” Mills said. “Anytime we can offer a chance to access something that has a barrier in front of it. We knock that down, get them in here, and get them from health care, and get them some food. Kind of leave them feeling well.”
Loaves and Fishes distribute free groceries four days a week to families in need and is currently accepting donations as demand continues to grow
