Here’s our weekly round-up of what illnesses are spreading the most in Metro Detroit communities, according to our local doctors and hospitals
Dr. Avery Harrell — Trinity Health Livonia Emergency Medicine Physician
“Our emergency department continues to see a mix of summertime illnesses and injuries, including sore throats and strep, vomiting and diarrhea, asthma flare-ups, and dehydration. Michigan’s cyclosporiasis outbreak appears to be slowing, but we are still seeing gastrointestinal illnesses and encourage residents with persistent or severe diarrhea to seek medical attention. We are also seeing the usual summer injuries, particularly falls, fractures, cuts, and injuries involving bicycles and e-scooters.”

“We’re seeing lots of allergies, and I’m seeing some stomach bugs. We didn’t see a ton of it (cyclospora); we were more getting emails. Our families stayed away from lettuce. I’m starting to see some hand-foot-month. We’re also doing the back-to-school checkups and fall sports physicals, too.”

“We are seeing a lot of orthopedic injuries – slips and falls – and a few heat-related injuries. We’re also seeing diarrhea and the sniffles.”

“As outdoor activities remain steady for the summer, primary care is seeing more injuries related to hiking, biking, swimming and other recreational activities. Protect yourself by wearing appropriate safety gear, staying hydrated, using sun protection and knowing your limits to help prevent avoidable injuries.”

“The hospital is seeing moderate volumes, including some possible cases of cyclosporiasis. With the warm weather and lack of smoke, respiratory illnesses have fortunately subsided a little, but it’s also the right time to think about preventive care and vaccinations going into the fall.”

“We have been seeing teenagers involved in e-bike accidents on a regular basis, and many were not wearing helmets. Helmets should be worn during any type of cycling to help prevent serious injuries.”

“We are seeing a lot of our late summer rashes and summer injuries. Some cases of vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased drinking and appetite. As well as our asthmatics are having some seasonal issues.”

“Recently we have seen a rise in patients with bug bites and other outdoor-related issues. Additionally, we are seeing patients with community-acquired pneumonia and stress-related issues.”

WASHTENAW COUNTY – Gastrointestinal illnesses, asthma flare-ups, croup, outdoor injuries, upper respiratory infections

“We are seeing lots of GI illness, not cyclosporiasis, with crampy pain, diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. There are some cases of asthma and there is an uptick in croup. We have seen several instances of orthopedic trauma and eye injuries.”

“The adult side is seeing low levels of GI illness and URIs this week. Low levels of suspected cyclosporidia cases this week.”

“Orthopedic and soft tissue injuries continue to be the most common reason patients are seeking care in the emergency department. There has also been a noticeable volume of patients with gastrointestinal distress, experiencing symptoms of nausea and vomiting. Airbourne allergens continue to cause wheezy and shallow breathing in asthma sufferers, with some patients experiencing severe breathing complications to the point of emergency care. There has been a slight uptick in the number of patients experiencing a rash or skin irritation following a bug bite or another environmental irritant, such as poison ivy or other allergic reactions.”

“We’re starting to see more patients with allergy flare-ups and viral colds. Patients with gastrointestinal issues continue to be common as well. We have also seen some cases involving rashes and some minor injuries/fractures.”
