Victoria residents will have a chance to gather Sept. 19 for Hazel’s Light Up for Mito Walk, an event raising awareness for a rare disease as part of World Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week
The walk will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., beginning at the front steps of Christ Church Cathedral at Courtney and Quadra streets. The cathedral will be lit up green before participants walk as a group along Broughton Street and Government Street, finishing at the B.C. legislature, which will also be illuminated green
Several businesses and organizations along the Broughton Street route have participated in previous years by lighting their buildings green
The event is organized with support from MitoCanada, a charity dedicated to raising awareness and supporting people affected by mitochondrial disease
Mitochondrial diseases are a group of rare genetic disorders that can affect how cells produce energy and can have a significant impact on people living with them
The event has previously brought together families affected by mitochondrial diseases, including a 14-week-old baby and her family following a recent diagnosis of a life-limiting mitochondrial disease
More information about the event is available through mitocanada.org
