THE rise of weight loss medication has transformed the way many people approach losing weight, but a Middlewich slimming consultant believes support groups still have a vital role to play
Debbie Ashley, who runs Slimming World in Middlewich, says some people taking weight loss medication are continuing to attend the programme’s sessions to learn about healthy eating and receive support from others on a similar journey
The comments come as growing numbers of people across the UK access weight loss drugs designed to help curb appetite and support weight reduction

To date, the cost has priced many out of the market, but a new oral drug, Foundayo, licenced in August, is expected to hit the shelves at around half the price of its predecessor, Weygovy, at around £100-£110 a month
Debbie believes medication can be an effective tool for some people, but says it does not replace the wider support available through slimming groups
“Many people can feel alone when they are taking weight loss medication and they don’t have access to the right support,” she said
“Weight loss medication does not offer healthy eating guidance, an active lifestyle, or group support.”

Debbie said there is growing recognition some people may remain on weight-loss medication for longer periods, yet still want help developing healthier habits
“Overall, Slimming World offers food education, with over 56 years of experience, and there is a wealth of <a href="https://healthylife7.com/bc-health-research-pursues-precision-genetics/” title=”BC health research pursues precision, genetics”>research to back it up,” she said
“It is possible for many people to now take weight loss products in the longer term, and we also have many members who have been following a healthy eating programme for a long time.”
Debbie says feedback from Slimming World members who are also taking weight loss drugs suggests they value both the appetite suppressing effects of the medication and the opportunity to learn more about nutrition

“The research from these people shows they love the benefits of powerful group support, and they also learn how to eat healthily whilst having a reduced appetite,” she said
Debbie also highlighted the social side of attending a slimming group, describing the Middlewich sessions as ‘welcoming and supportive’
“Slimming World Middlewich is a lovely welcoming place,” she said
“Many members describe the group as being like family.”
She added people using weight loss medication should not feel apprehensive about attending
She added: “We would love to support more members taking weight loss medication, and want these to know we offer equality of support for all
Middlewich Slimming World takes place at the Wych Centre in Civic Way on Tuesdays at 9.30am, 11.00am, 5.30pm and 7pm
