Texas (RFD News) — Growing use of glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1, weight-loss drugs could reshape food demand across agriculture as consumers eat less and change what they buy. Terrain specialty crop analyst Matt Woolf says producers should begin factoring those shifts into long-term decisions as adoption expands

Surveys cited by Terrain suggest 12 percent to 18 percent of U.S. adults have used a GLP-1 drug. Research also shows users may cut daily calorie intake by 720 to 990 calories, while households with a user reduced grocery spending 5.3 percent within six months

Food choices are shifting too. Fresh fruit, leafy greens and water appear better positioned, while processed foods, refined grains and alcohol face more pressure. Meat results remain mixed, and restaurant spending declined 8 percent after GLP-1 adoption

For producers, the challenge is timing. Consumer habits can change quickly, while farms, processing plants, land use and distribution systems take years to adjust. Commodity groups may also need to rethink marketing strategies

Woolf says producers should monitor new research and decisions by major food companies and restaurants as early signals of changing demand

Farm-Level Takeaway: Expanding GLP-1 use could alter food demand enough to influence long-term production and marketing decisions across agriculture.
