The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged people to use GLP-1 receptor agonists only under the supervision of qualified healthcare professionals. The advisory follows the rapid global rise in the use of these medicines, particularly for weight loss, and growing concerns over misuse and purchases from unregulated

    Avoid Self-Medication and Unverified Sources

As per WHO, GLP-1 receptor agonists have a well-established benefit-risk profile when used for their approved indications and under medical supervision. However, obtaining these medicines through online platforms, informal sellers, or other unauthorized channels increases the risk of substandard or falsified products. Self-medication and the lack of proper monitoring can also lead to preventable and potentially serious health complications

Use Medicines Only When Clinically Indicated

WHO noted that the growing demand for GLP-1 medicines is being driven largely by social media and online marketing, including among people without obesity or a medical indication. The organisation stressed that healthcare professionals should determine whether these medicines are appropriate, prescribe the correct dose, and monitor patients throughout treatment

Report Side Effects to Improve Safety

In addition, WHO encouraged healthcare professionals, patients, manufacturers, and public health authorities to report adverse events through national pharmacovigilance systems. Such reporting helps regulators detect emerging safety concerns, monitor long-term use, and support evidence-based decisions on the safe and appropriate use of GLP-1 medicines
