Wis. (WBAY) — The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is urging residents to take precautions against tick-borne illnesses, including anaplasmosis — the second most common tick-spread disease in the state

While Lyme disease is the most widely known tick-borne illness, health officials said anaplasmosis is also a significant concern. The deer tick, which carries the disease, can be found in every county in Wisconsin

Symptoms typically appear five days to two weeks after a bite from an infected tick

Early symptoms are often mild and can include fever, chills, and muscle aches. If left untreated, the illness can become serious and lead to organ failure, according to health officials

State health leaders recommend the following precautions any time residents are outdoors:

    • Use EPA-registered bug spray
    • Wear long sleeves and pants when possible
    • Perform a full tick check on yourself, children, and pets immediately upon returning indoors

Wisconsin recorded nearly 1,100 confirmed anaplasmosis cases last year — the highest total in the past 10 years

State health officials have additional safety tips and symptom information available at www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/tick/anaplasmosis.htm
