Nigerians have been advised to stay properly hydrated by drinking enough water to help keep the body functioning efficiently, sharpen the mind, boost energy levels, and prevent fatigue throughout the day

Dr. Yetunde Odusolu, a consultant public health physician at Ikorodu General Hospital, Lagos, who gave the advice while speaking with The Guardian, said that water is one of the most essential elements of life, yet many people underestimate its importance in maintaining good health

By paying attention to daily water intake, Dr. Odusolu said that “individuals can improve their overall wellbeing and remain active and focused.”

Dr. Odusolu said that the human body is made up of about 60 percent water, highlighting the critical role fluids play in sustaining life

“Some of the body’s most important organs, including the brain, heart, lungs, and kidneys, contain nearly 80 per cent water. These organs rely on adequate hydration to perform their vital functions effectively, making regular water consumption an essential part of a healthy lifestyle,” she noted

According to Odusolu, “It is important to take water because it serves as a medium that carries nutrients, vitality and power for body function. Water helps in myriad functions in the body.
“Dehydration can be life-threatening, especially in children, the elderly, and sick individuals. Mild dehydration can cause fatigue, headaches and poor focus. Staying hydrated helps to prevent illness, boosts energy and supports overall health.”

She added that water intake depends on the humidity, age, climate, weather, activity level of the individual, among others

While recommending daily water intake for various age groups, she said: “The following are general daily recommendations from all beverages and water-rich foods combined: Adult men is about 3.7 litres/day (15½ cups), adult women about 2.7 litres per day (11½ cups), pregnant women about 3.0 litres per day (12½ cups), breastfeeding women 3.8 litres per day (16 cups), children 1–3 years about 1.3 litres per day, children 4–8 years about 1.7 litres per day, boys 9–13 years about 2.4 litres per day, girls 9–13 years about 2.1 litres per day, boys 14–18 years about 3.3 litres per day and giirls 14–18 years about 2.3 litres per day.

According to her, water remains the healthiest and most effective choice for hydration. “It contains no added sugar or unnecessary calories and supports numerous bodily functions, including transporting nutrients to cells, removing waste products, protecting joints and organs, and regulating body temperature.
“Water needs increase during hot weather, illness (especially fever, vomiting, or diarrhea), strenuous physical activity, and for people living in hot climates.”

Odusolu affirmed that making water the preferred beverage every day is a simple yet powerful habit that supports long-term health, improves physical performance, and helps the body perform at its very best
