WANA (Aug 14) – The story starts at a family party in Tehran. A place where conversations no longer revolve around politics or economics, but rather around a hot topic: “What is your prescription? Mounjaro or Espartina?
In a country where “beauty” was once defined by natural curves or complex surgeries, now a new and accelerating wave of injectable magic has taken over society
These days, Iran is witnessing an unprecedented trend in the consumption of weight-loss injections; a wave that no longer even requires going to a clinic or being injected by a doctor, but injection pens simply sit inside home refrigerators next to food items, and people inject them themselves at home
Bitter Iranian Humor
Iranians, who are famous for having high comedic intelligence when facing social phenomena, have not left this wave untouched either. It is enough to take a look at Instagram Explore or TikTok to face a flood of short funny videos; jokes with the message that: “Iranian society is suddenly changing state from size XL to XS!” But this humor has another side as well

The New Generation in Iran: Surgeries to Cultural Changes
WANA (Jan 09) – The new generation in Iran has witnessed profound and remarkable transformations. Pointing the arrow of criticism towards “fitness influencers” and trainers who carry the word “athlete” in their bio pages. Many users, by producing humorous content, expose how people claim strict diets and continuous exercise with few-second injections at home and without sweating
A phenomenon that has caused people who have exercised for years for real to experience a kind of frustration and negative feelings towards their body, because the standard of beauty has shifted and the speed of personal injection has overcome the continuity of practice
Fast Dream, Real Side Effects
In field studies and the virtual space of Iranian society, three names are seen more than any other: Mounjaro, Espartina, and Ozempic. The most important feature that has made these drugs so popular is the periodic dose injection by the person themselves at home, without any need to visit medical centers
But this sweet dream does not always have a happy ending. One of the consumers recounts her experience as follows:
“In the first few weeks I felt amazing. Its injection was very easy, and I did it myself at home. My appetite became completely zero, and the word ‘hunger’ was erased from my everyday vocabulary. But very soon, the other side of the coin showed itself. Severe hair loss and continuous weakness started.”
She added, “Worst of all was when I stopped the course; my appetite returned with several times more strength, and all the lost weight returned. It felt like I had entered a cycle where I had to keep myself dependent on these home injections forever.”
This experience shows that without correcting mindset and lifestyle, these arbitrary injections are only a “temporary painkiller” with high physical and financial costs
Obesity Is a Disease, Not Just a Beauty Tool
To scientifically analyze this trend, one must go to experts. Dr. Neda Meftah, an endocrinologist and faculty member of Babol University of Medical Sciences, expressing concern about these arbitrary behaviors, says:
“Unfortunately, many people still consider obesity merely an appearance or beauty issue, whereas from a medical point of view, obesity is a chronic, progressive, and treatable disease.”

Statistics in Iran are shocking:
- 23.3 percent of Iranian adults suffer from obesity (1 out of every 4 people).
- Counting overweight, this figure reaches more than 60 percent of the country’s adult population.
Dr. Meftah, warning against arbitrary injections at home and procuring drugs from unverified
“These injectable drugs are specialized medical products, not a beauty product or a fast solution for weight loss. Ease of use should not cause people to inject without checking body mass index, underlying diseases, and proper dosage under a doctor’s supervision.”
Incorrect use can bring severe side effects such as severe nausea, vomiting, severe dehydration, and other more serious risks. No drug replaces healthy nutrition and physical activity,” Dr. Meftah said
Shortcut or Mirage?
Today’s Iranian society blends modernity, social media pressures, and quick fixes. The trend of using Mounjaro and Espartina at home isn’t just medical; it’s a sign of a society eager for rapid stress and appearance management. Yet, as users and doctors warn, without lifestyle changes and mental preparedness, these injections are a costly mirage, not a health shortcut
Fast Fix, Big Risk: Iran’s Antibiotic Overuse
WANA (Dec 18) – Imagine a day when you have just woken up and feel tightness in your throat, pain in your body, and a slight headache. The first conclusion you draw is that you have probably caught a cold, and at best, you start drinking plenty of fluids and eventually visit a doctor. […]
