Mich. (News 10) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning of a significant increase in emergency room visits linked to frequent marijuana use, tied to a condition known as cannabis hyperemesis syndrome

Cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, or CHS, is a painful illness caused by long-term, frequent cannabis use. It produces sudden episodes of nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain

Historically, CHS went largely undiagnosed, appearing in roughly one out of every 3,000 emergency room visits. A new diagnostic code has since allowed for better medical tracking and clinical recognition

Hospitals are now seeing CHS in about one out of every 888 ER visits — more than triple the original rate

The steepest increases are being reported among cannabis users aged 15 to 24, particularly teenage girls and young women

“Anything in excess is just going to be bad for us: too much protein, too much fat, too much carbohydrates — but also too much marijuana,” Dr. Michael Estes at 98point6 Emergicenter said

Dr. Estes said he has known about the syndrome for 10 to 15 years but says local cases have surged recently—primarily among teenage boys and young men

Estes noted that age played a role in how the syndrome affects the body, stating that his younger patients tend to have more severe, prolonged symptoms than older adults

Dr. Jed Magen, with Michigan State University’s Department of Psychiatry, said he does not endorse marijuana use and pointed to the increasing potency of cannabis products as a concern

“The concentration of THC and cannabinoids, and multiple other substances, is much greater than it used to be — so you’re smoking a much more concentrated product,” Magen said

Although cannabis is legal and sometimes used to help cope with anxiety, Magen said he encourages people to speak with a medical professional for <a href="https://healthylife7.com/feeling-hot-and-bothered-exploring-the-link-between-hormones-and-mental-health/” title=”Feeling hot and bothered? The CDC says cessation of cannabis can resolve CHS symptoms. Severe cases, however, can lead to dehydration, organ strain, or, in rare cases, death
