Got Question about the News?
Freshly prepared, fibre-rich meals can help support digestive health during the monsoon.
The monsoon brings much-needed respite from the summer heat, but the season can also bring a host of health challenges. Increased humidity, fluctuating temperatures, contaminated food and water, and changes in eating habits can make the body more vulnerable to infections and digestive discomfort. For many people, maintaining good gut health during the rainy season becomes particularly important
“During the monsoon, our body’s exposure to bacteria and viruses naturally increases, while digestive efficiency can be affected by changes in weather and food habits,” says Dr. Anis Beg, MBBS, DCH, Pediatrician & Director, Anis Super specialty Hospital, Bareilly

Why Gut Health Needs Extra Attention During Monsoon
The rainy season often changes the way people eat. Street food, cut fruits, raw salads and other foods exposed to humid conditions may carry a higher risk of contamination if they are not handled or stored properly. At the same time, changes in appetite, physical activity and hydration can affect digestion
Dr Beg recommends being particularly mindful about food choices during this period. “I often advise patients to prioritise freshly cooked meals, minimise consumption of raw foods from outside,” he says
Freshly prepared food, consumed while it is still hot, can be a safer choice during the monsoon. Raw foods purchased from outside, particularly those that may have been exposed to contaminated water or handled improperly, can increase the risk of gastrointestinal infections
Add Fibre to Support Digestion
A balanced diet during the monsoon should not mean eliminating entire food groups. Instead, the focus should be on nutritious, freshly prepared meals that support regular digestion
Dr Beg also recommends ensuring “adequate intake of fibre to support digestive health.” Fibre-rich foods can help maintain regular bowel movements and support a healthy digestive system. Seasonal vegetables, fruits that are washed thoroughly, whole grains, pulses and other fibre-rich foods can be incorporated into everyday meals
However, hygiene remains important. Fruits and vegetables should be washed properly before consumption, particularly when they are being eaten raw
Can Fermented Foods Help?
Fermented foods can also have a role in supporting gut health. Foods containing beneficial microorganisms may contribute to a healthy gut microbiome when they are prepared and stored hygienically
“Fermented foods, when prepared hygienically, can also help maintain a healthy gut microbiome, which plays an important role in overall immune function,” Dr. Beg explains
The emphasis on hygiene is especially relevant during the monsoon. Fermented foods should be prepared using clean ingredients and utensils and stored appropriately to minimise the risk of unwanted microbial contamination
Don’t Ignore Hidden Dehydration
While dehydration is commonly associated with hot summer months, it can also occur during the monsoon. High humidity can increase fluid loss, while the cooler weather may make people less conscious of their need to drink water
“People should also be mindful of hidden dehydration caused by humidity,” says Dr. Beg, adding that it “can contribute to fatigue and headaches even when thirst isn’t obvious.”
Rather than waiting until thirst sets in, maintaining regular fluid intake throughout the day can help support hydration. Water, soups and other appropriate fluids can contribute to daily fluid intake, while excessively sugary beverages may be best kept to a minimum
Small Changes Can Make a Difference
Monsoon wellness does not necessarily require a dramatic overhaul of one’s diet. Simple, consistent habits, eating freshly prepared food, maintaining food hygiene, getting enough fibre, staying hydrated and including hygienically prepared fermented foods, can help support digestive and overall health through the season
Dr Beg also points to the growing focus on proactive seasonal nutrition. “Initiatives such as 750AD Healthcare’s monsoon wellness campaign and its Solbacca range are encouraging consumers to think more proactively about nutrition and seasonal wellness,” he says

Ultimately, the goal is to make everyday food choices that help the body cope with seasonal changes
As Dr Beg puts it, “small, consistent dietary adjustments during this season can significantly improve the body’s ability to adapt and recover.”
