Former NFL running back LeSean McCoy has spoken in support of Daejon Love after federal prosecutors accused Love of using a fake San Francisco 49ers identity in an alleged $1.3 million romance and investment scam. On Speakeasy, McCoy compared the case with situations where people are fooled by someone’s fake lifestyle. His comments came days after Love and Taylor Jamie Chan were arrested in Boise, Idaho.

McCoy discussed Love during the August 30 episode of Speakeasy. He said he felt Love was being judged differently because he was a man, then compared the case with women who may also present a false image on social media.“I love Daejon Love,” McCoy said. “Every time a man does something, they wanna crucify us for it. I watch women do this all the time!”McCoy then described a situation where someone appears wealthy online, with expensive bags, cars and a nice home, only for a partner to later discover that the lifestyle was not real.His point was that a person can believe they are dating someone successful without knowing the full story behind that person’s money or possessions.“And then you’re, ‘Oh, she’s been scamming me.’ No, she’s not. The bags are fake; somebody else bought them for you,” McCoy said. “You don’t have this luxury job and life that you say that you do. Now, I’m stuck; now I’ve been fooled.”He added that he would then wonder who would repay him for the money he had spent while believing the other person was living the life they showed online.McCoy’s comments were about his view of the situation. They do not change the allegations against Love or the criminal case now before the courts.According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon, Love, 35, and Chan, 18, were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud. Both were arrested at Boise Airport on August 24. The charges remain allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Federal prosecutors say the alleged scheme began in February 2022 and continued until the arrests. Love allegedly met women through dating apps and presented himself as either a San Francisco 49ers player or a wealthy real estate investor.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon said Love used several names, including Jon Love, Daejon Love, Avril Lyto Love and Jordan Love. He also allegedly used social media photos, luxury items and fake financial information to make his claims look real.Chan allegedly played the role of Love’s financial adviser. Prosecutors say the pair offered fake investment opportunities and showed victims false account balances and investment gains.Authorities have identified 26 victims across California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The FBI believes there may be more. Prosecutors say the pair received about $1.3 million from the victims, while those interviewed did not receive investment returns.Love and Chan remain in federal custody in Boise.
