A new PlayStation 5 action-adventure game from Capcom has earned rave reviews ahead of its debut. Notably, it’s the first installment in a classic franchise in over two decades

Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword has managed to steal critics’ attention and praise ahead of its awaited release this week

Being a reboot, Onimusha: Way of the Sword arrives 20 years after 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. The new entry is set in the historic Japanese capital of Edo-era Kyoto

Players control the main character of Miyamoto Musashi, who wields the Oni Gauntlet. The main story sees him fighting against the monstrosities from the underworld known as Genma

Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s combat and boss battles steal the show

Most of the reviewers have admired Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s captivating combat, boss battles, and exploration <a href="https://healthylife7.com/google-made-android-17s-best-feature-a-pixel-11/” title=”Google made Android 17’s best feature a Pixel 11″>features that elevate the overall experience to a whole new level. As a result, they make this reboot worth playing, according to critics

At the time of this article’s publication, Way of the Sword holds an outstanding ‘Mighty’ status on OpenCritic. It has earned an average score of 85 out of 100, based on 68 reviews

Tyler Treese of PlayStation LifeStyle wrote that the game’s “combat is a real joy, as you can switch between one-handed and two-handed sword strikes, use the environment around you to take care of crowds, and parry opponents to destroy their stamina.”

Robert Ramsey of Push Square admired the game’s swordplay and called it a “modern Capcom masterpiece. Its combat is clearly the main draw and it’s a superb system once it gets rolling. The boss fights in particular are some of the best you’ll find on PS5.”

Shubhankar Parijat of Gamingbolt underlined that Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a great reboot for avid players of the franchise. It offers an “incredible, best-in-class swordfighting combat, making for an overall package that is well worth the long time that series fans have been waiting for it.”

Cesar Salcedo of GamerFocus admired the “depth of its combat system” and the “spectacular nature of its boss fights” and wrote that it manages to “adapt the franchise to modern standards without losing its identity or its dark fantasy atmosphere.”

Sam Aberdeen of Nexus Hub wrote that Way of the Sword puts Capcom at the top of its game with “thrilling combat, boss fight spectacles, and a charismatic, endearing protagonist in Musashi.”

Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on September 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, alongside Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2
