A Vegan Fosters Good Nutrition in Pregnancy
New research shows that pregnant women consuming a vegan diet have levels of vitamin B12, vitamin B2, folate, vitamin D, iron, and gamma-linolenic acid comparable to omnivores. Essential fatty acid levels were lower in vegan participants, though there are no established reference ranges for pregnancy. A healthful plant-based diet during pregnancy includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and a reliable source of vitamin B12, along with whatever additional supplements are recommended by one’s physician.
