Americans advised to exercise caution at this Caribbean island

Americans are being urged to “exercise increased caution” at a popular Caribbean destination due to potential crime
The State Department recently raised its travel advisory for St. Lucia to a Level 2. That’s on a scale of 1 to 4, where Level 1 stands for “exercise normal precautions” and Level 4 means “do not travel.”
The advisory issued July 10 says petty crime is common in St. Lucia, and while most crimes against foreigners are along the lines of pickpocketing and purse snatching, “Violent crime can occur anywhere in Saint Lucia. U.S. citizens and other foreigners in Saint Lucia have been victims of armed robbery, assault, burglary, and rape. In some cases, U.S. citizens have been killed.” It also notes police response may be slower than in the U.S
The State Department shared the following practical tips for travelers visiting St. Lucia:
- Stay aware of your surroundings in general and alert in tourist areas, banks and at ATMs.
- Keep a low profile. Don’t display signs of wealth, like expensive watches or jewelry.
- Use caution when walking or driving at night.
- Do not answer your door at your hotel or residence unless you know who it is.
- Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
