Ashton Jeanty is getting healthier ahead of his second season in the NFL

“The biggest thing to lose from my diet was definitely sugar,” the Las Vegas Raiders running back said during an interview with CBS Sports’ Bryant McFadden on Wednesday.

“I love candy, all of that. Just really cutting that down … and just working out, really building up my cardio. Getting in better shape. I didn’t feel I was in good enough shape last year. Being able to play longer than everybody and be more physical longer, I think is really important at running back.”

Training camp stories about players changing their diets and workout regimes to get in the best shape of their life have become so common they are basically a cliche and running joke among football fans

But Jeanty is not a veteran who has been in the league for years. Instead, he is someone who has dominated throughout much of his football career before discovering just how difficult the NFL can be during his rookie campaign

And he is responding accordingly by getting into better shape and changing his approach

There was no shortage of hype surrounding Jeanty’s arrival with the Raiders as the No. 6 overall pick of the 2025 NFL draft. After all, he was the Doak Walker Award winner in his final collegiate season at Boise State and led the Broncos to a spot in the College Football Playoff

He also finished just short of Barry Sanders’ NCAA single-season record of 2,628 rushing yards with 2,601

Yet the overwhelming dominance came to a stop when he arrived at the NFL

While Jeanty ran for a solid 975 yards as a rookie, he posted a lackluster 3.7 yards per carry and scored just five times on the ground. He was not as effective as many fans and fantasy football managers expected going into the season, which puts him under the spotlight heading into his second season

He is clearly doing what he can to take a second-year leap and believes getting in better shape will help him do just that
