It is often assumed that the brain ages in step with the rest of the body. However, mounting evidence suggests that the brain can begin to decline both physically and functionally much earlier than many people realise

Long-term exposure to metabolic disorders, vascular damage and unhealthy lifestyle habits can accelerate this process, increasing the risk of cognitive impairment later in life

According to Dr Pradeep Sharma, Senior Consultant and Assistant Professor, Neurosurgery, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, protecting brain health should begin long before any symptoms appear

The brain depends on healthy blood vessels

One of the most important factors influencing brain health is the condition of the blood vessels that supply it

“The health of the blood vessels that feed the brain is closely linked to the health of the brain,” says Dr Sharma

Although the brain makes up only around two per cent of the body’s total weight, it is one of the most energy-demanding organs

    More from Lifestyle

“The brain accounts for only about two per cent of the body weight but consumes nearly 20 per cent of the body’s oxygen and glucose. Even mild reductions in cerebral blood flow associated with hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol or smoking can gradually impair neuronal function,” he explains

These changes may occur gradually over many years, often without obvious symptoms, but they can have lasting consequences

“Over time, these changes reduce cognitive reserve, speed up brain atrophy and raise the risk of stroke, vascular cognitive impairment and dementia,” Dr Sharma adds

Lifestyle habits can accelerate brain ageing

While ageing itself is inevitable, several lifestyle factors can hasten the decline in brain function

Recent research suggests that chronic sleep deprivation, persistent psychological stress, physical inactivity and repeated head injuries contribute to premature cognitive ageing

These factors promote neuroinflammation, oxidative stress and disruption of neuronal networks, all of which can damage brain cells and impair cognitive function over time

In addition, unmanaged metabolic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol further increase the burden on the brain by compromising blood flow and reducing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients essential for healthy neuronal activity

    Protecting the brain starts early

Despite these risks, accelerated brain ageing is not an unavoidable outcome

Dr Sharma emphasises that adopting healthy habits can preserve brain function and delay age-related cognitive decline

Regular aerobic exercise, restorative sleep, a nutrient-rich diet, intellectual stimulation and effective management of cardiovascular risk factors all play an important role in maintaining neuronal health

Rather than waiting for symptoms such as forgetfulness or declining memory to appear, preventive measures should begin much earlier

“The brain should be protected from early adulthood, not when the memory problems appear,” says Dr Sharma

    Prevention is better than cure

Experts increasingly recognise that brain health is closely connected to overall physical health. Looking after cardiovascular health, maintaining an active lifestyle, prioritising good-quality sleep and keeping the mind engaged can all help preserve cognitive function as people age

With dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions becoming increasingly common, early prevention offers one of the most effective strategies for maintaining brain health throughout life

As Dr Sharma’s advice makes clear, protecting the brain is a lifelong commitment that should begin in early adulthood rather than after cognitive decline has already set in
