Eli Lilly Ripe for Stock Split After Obesity Drug-Fueled Rally

(Bloomberg) — Wall Street’s appetite for weight-loss drug stocks over the past four years has powered Eli Lilly & Co. to consistently trade above $1,000 per share. Now, some see the pharma giant’s stock as primed for a split

Shares jumped 285% since 2022, when Lilly’s GLP-1 drug Mounjaro was first approved as a treatment for diabetes. That regulatory nod, coupled with a subsequent approval of weight-loss shot Zepbound for obesity, helped propel Lilly to become the first pharmaceutical company to cross the $1 trillion threshold. The company is one of only 15 S&P 500 Index members with a share price north of $1,000

Typically, a stock split allows companies to carve up shares into multiple slices to help bring down prices without impacting overall valuation or fundamentals. Companies usually split their shares to attract smaller investors

“It can provide a signal that the management team thinks the stock’s likely to continue to grow,” said Allen Bond, a portfolio manager for Jensen Investment Management, which owns Lilly shares. “Mathematically it doesn’t really change anything from like a value perspective.”

When share prices start to look too costly to investors, companies execute a stock split. In 2024, Nvidia Corp. announced a 10-for-1 forward split following an AI-fueled rally, while Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. announced a historic 50-to-1 split. Earlier this year, Booking Holdings Inc. said it will give investors 25 shares for each one they own as its stock traded above $4,000 apiece

For Indianapolis-based Lilly, “given the high nominal price of the stock, just the fact that it’s over $1,000 a share, it’s kind of a clean threshold there,” Bond said

To be sure, Lilly hasn’t made any indication that it would split its shares anytime soon. Moreover, investors who aren’t ready to pay for a four-figure price for the stock can currently buy fractional shares of the drugmaker, or hold fewer units

Still, Wall Street mostly views the prospect of a stock split as a positive. “I only see upside for the company because they would technically have new shareholders gravitating toward something that would be deemed more affordable,” said Ken Mahoney, CEO at Mahoney Asset Management
