Could your daily schedule play a critical role in reducing pain? New research says yes

Scientists found that having a consistent routine may offer benefits for both your physical and mental health

The study from the University of Missouri found that older adults who followed regular daily schedules had less physical pain and fewer symptoms of depression and insomnia. It noticed that everyday patterns, like waking, eating, working, and socializing, may support overall well-being.

According to the release, nearly half of adults ages 60 and older experience symptoms of insomnia, a figure it credits to the National Council on Aging. Eunjin Tracy, PhD, one of the study’s first authors, is an assistant professor in the department of human development and family science at the University of Missouri. Of the 67 adults her team surveyed, 37 of them had insomnia.

The study, which was published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Behavioral Medicine, drew from self-reported surveys, meaning that the results point to an association—rather than definitive proof.

The researchers expected those with insomnia to report more pain and symptoms of depression. However, Tracy reported that those who maintained regular daily routines in the group tended to experience less pain and depression—regardless of how well they slept. The study also linked more consistent routines to a lower body mass index
